Wanna Sandwich

Here the finished painting to my sketch tutorial as seen on my blog I wish I could show how I paint, but I don't have a real set painting form. My new sketching technique is one that I am very happy with. I go back and forth between two art programs Photoshop and Sketchbook pro 2009.

Cool as always. :) What on earth is he eating? LOL

I wish you could show how you paint too....:) I would love a peek in that brain.
The only suggestion I have is to add more depth or shadow to the gooh dripping off the the sandwhich or maybe a shadow on his body to show the drip. That is really petty, but that is all I can see. :)

first of all that looks like the sandwich my wife eats - just a sammich with avocado, lettuce and pickles and extra extra mix (from Mario's deli...the mix is a spread of mustard and mayo mixed up...terrific stuff). But her sammiches look just like that...yellow mix seeping out of everywhere - and she always offers me some - but why would someone eat this? Oh, and this guy kinda looks like my wife...heh.

But anyway - this is terrific! I like that you did a tutorial for the sketching - it's crazy how you go from both programs like that - but it totally works for you - I guess I do something similar - but it's paper to illustrator and then print it out and revise on the paper and then scan it in and back to illustrator - and then exporting to photoshop for coloring.

I like the detail you put in this! terrific hair detail - great whiskers! Great detail in the sammich too! I like all the 'mix' and the highlights and such.

The only thing I'd say is that your character is looking a little too much like a monster. So tone that back a bit...

hope you don't take that last paragraph seriously...

One small thing I noticed though - the hand that's holding the sandwich kind of melds into the stomach folds. Is there a way to differentiate these things? Like - the stomach can be white or just a different color - or a shadow to set them apart...because it should look more like it's coming out in space and it looks like it's either a part of the stomach, or resting on the stomach...

And I like white bellies (all my characters end up with them for some reason)...

Great stuff though! I like the pose and I like the character!

Ditto that. I think this illustration is very well put together! I like the originality of the entire idea. I lean towards the out-of-this-world situational in much my art...and this ranks right up there (which, in my book, is great.). Who ever expects to be offered a bite of sandwich from a blue-horned beast?

I think the details are great, as well. Particularly the detail in the eyes. From afar the seem to be plain old dots, but the viewer gets something more with further inspection. I also think you do great things with your lighting...carrying the shadows throughout the piece...right down to the light castings shadows from the olive.

I agree that some color variation might make the the character read easier. There's lots of blue in this one, but you may be going monochromatic for a reason, so I leave that to you. It certainly brings the focus on the sandwich.

Perhaps my favorite detail is the repeating pattern on the wall. Did you set a pattern to repeat, or did you just create and intertwine?

Nice work again, Steve.

Okay, upon further review I thought of something else. It might be interesting to see how things'd look if you carried some of the pink flesh tones throughout the rest of his body. Meaning that he's got pink skin on his nose and on the inside of his ears. What would you think about carrying that into his lips, insides of his hands, armpits, etc?

That could have a drastic impact (positive or negative). Not sure...just jumped into my head and thought I'd mention it.

This made me laugh when I looked at it. You did a really nice job. I really like how the hand is coming forward with the really disgusting sandwich!

I like how the shape of the sandwich resembles the monster somehow. Very fun image, and has amazing detail and personality as all your other monsters do. Can't think of anything to nitpick :)
