I like this. great style and technique. Can you explain what illustration Friday is? You mention it many of your posts.

Thank you Steve! Illustration Friday is this: http://www.illustrationfriday.com/
A weekly word challenge for illustrators, just for fun and to keep everyone in practice. If you illustrate something for that week's word, you can post it there. :)

What a beautiful, serene, warm image! The girl has so much personality and seems so real - not just a flat character ... her outrageously long hair, simple summer clothes, bare feet. Love it.

Carmen, it is, as usual, warm and lovely. Two things for me, though: the hair and the depiction of space at the bottom. It's just the longer I stare at the illo, the more I wonder if her hair should be shorter nearest her body (since it technically comes from the farther side of her head), and how the space us supposed to be at the bottom. I think the "steps" are growing from the tree trunk and thus are supposed to be vertical, right? The other way I see it is that they are coming forward horizontally, which made me think the tree is submerged in water and the steps are floating on it. My eyes are really tired right now, though, so it may be my vision is distorted.

Btw, my illustration friday entry will totally be late this week :/

This is really nice. My only issues are also with space. I think it is just a matter of shading. The areas that I have concerns with are where she is touching the owl. It doesn't feel like she is touching it. I just feels like her hand is up. I think also if there is more shading difference in where she is sitting compared to where her hair is on the tree it would be helpful. I think I would also make the leaves feel really close and the girl and owl feel pushed back a bit more. Maybe more definition in the leaves and longer shadows.
I think the colors are really lovely. Her face is wonderful. It just feels like it needs more depth.

I love her hair!!! :) I am not sure that there shouldn't be a little more variety and darkness to the shadows behind the owl though...maybe a little deeper to bring out the fireflies. Love the polypore mushrooms...nice touch.

Good comments, thanks guys! Maybe I can fiddle with some shadows digitally....
Yep those are mushrooms growing out of the tree, looking kind of steplike!

Carmen, I think this is a lovely piece- I can feel the serenity.

The colors work well with it, but I think there is too much brown. If you do decide to play with it digitally, might I suggest that you change the color of the owl? Possibly white? You could make the mushrooms a more redder/blush color as well so that they stand out from the tree.
