Animal Kids!

Hi guys,
Here are a bunch of animal children. Something I have really struggled with is drawing characters doing something more than just standing face on and smiling, so the past two weeks I have been going to my local coffee shop and woring on drawing more dynamic characters over a 20 oz. chai. I also tend to draw a lot of bears and rabbits so I asked people randomly on facebook what I should draw and these are the animals that came up. I don't have any kind of story for these guys but they are so cute that I think it would be fun if I could come up with something...
Thanks for taking a peek :)

Aja, these look great! You didn't ask for c/c, so I hope you don't mind. A little more highlight on the apple in the platypus's(did I get the animal right?) hand to add to the roundness; moving the drawstring bows on the giraffe's shorts a little lower - the black bows blend in too much with his shorts' purple trim; and hitching up the girl's pink skirt a little higher.

And that's all ^_^ I really love that they are so very well developed ~

These are SO adorable Aja! Really great spot pieces for your portfolio I'd say. I love all the movement and costumes, and great animal choices. That makes me want to ask people what animals to draw too, heheh -- I tend to get stuck in the cat, rabbit and mouse rut.
Kris had some good suggestions; I can't really think of any others, aside from that I think giraffes have split hooves. These have great personality!

OO thank you both for your suggestions- i'll have to make some edits- particularly with the giraffe's hooves (i thought it looked funny!)

I'd say keep the chais coming. These are adorable!

I really like 'em all, Aja! Is this your next postcards piece? The colors are great and really add to your line work. And I like how you ventured into the lesser-illustrated animal characters. There just really aren't enough platypi in books these days, are there?

One suggestion would be for the jump rope. It's looking pretty stagnant. Maybe altering the line so that the rope is bending in front of his feet (instead of underneath) would give it some more action. I think it'd work with the hands in place where they are.

Awesome work! Can't wait to see the next batch of critters!

Thank you Pattie and Pete!

Pete I agree with you that the Turtle could be more dynamic- maybe I'll give him a little more room and give that rope a bit more swing!

These were really just made to be an exercise in drawing forms, but I am starting to really find the characters appealing. I think I am going to create a second set of them doing something else and perhaps build in some licensing opportunities around them, and maybe draw up some regular drawing pages, too.

Thanks for all your kind words and advice!

These look pretty terrific! There's a lot of character to these characters! You did a great job anthropomorphising these guys! I love the buck teeth of the giraffe!

The only thing I could see is that several things tend to flatten out because they're in complete profile - like the tiger's right foot (you have several other feet, such as the owl's right foot that you see another toe, which help keep it from flattening out), and the squirrel - I can't tell if the tail is supposed to be in front of it, or if he's lying on the tail...and actually the squirrel is one where he's entirely in profile, but it seems like you see too much of the bottom of his foot...the angle seems different...

Anyway - great job! I love the characters and the color choices!

Hi, They are all adorable! I do agre with each comment contributed though. Isaac's perspective comments are well noted too. I also wasn't sure if the adorable girl is a hedgehog or opposum. Either way, she is cute, but her tail would need to change if she is an opposum.
These have great potential for licensing or some sort of story. I hope something comes of them. :)
