something is lacking...

I can't put my finger on it, but this piece is lacking something...anyone have any suggestions?  I tried to do the whole thing in Adobe Illustrator, which is why there's so much flat color....

I take it he is in the sky, but it looks like he is standing. The cone of light feel really hard edged especially at the bottom. I think the bottom of it also adds to why he looks like he is standing. I'd add more stars in the upper half of the blue as well. His face is cute.

It's kind of boring because it's a straight on view and everything lines up perfectly on both sides. Straight on views are often not interesting to look at. Also the light comes to a sudden stop indicating that it is hitting ground but there are stars below the ground. His feet also seem to be standing on ground. if he's floating the feet might point down more.

Perhaps is just a matter of needing more to look at in the composition. Without some variation somewhere, my eyes go directly to your main character but don't look for anything else. Maybe varying your blue background with different hues/saturations might help.

I like the character design. You did a great job with the wings and arranging the feathers. Your style also comes through in this one. I'm still amazed at what you all create digitally...it's an animal I've yet to encounter or even try to tame.

I agree with the confusion as to where he is in the picture. it's hard to determine whether he's standing or floating.

Hi Isaac, I agree with Pete and Steve. It is great character design and ideas, but it needs to be more interesting....Try moving him out of the middle of the composition and making his palms turned down and feet more pointy to give the idea that he is ascending. :)
Great bright colors though and I know how hard it is to get good color in Illustrator....I would much rather draw and paint in PS. :)

Another quick thought...I think the horizon needs to move too (thinking the stars need to move up???) and maybe add a color fade to making the sky darker below....I like him though, so keep tweaking it. :)

Hi Issac,

I think he is adorable. There was one thing that popped out at me. The ray of light was brighter than his clothing. Try toning down the brightness in the ray of light and increasing the brightness in his clothing. See how that works out for you.
