Rough Sketch

I need to work on drawing children more so started to do a little sketching. Here is a rough sketch of a girl reading. I may try painting the same image to see how it comes out. I need the practice.

I don't know if you were asking for commentary on your sketch...but I'm gonna...

I like the pose. I have a problem with crossing legs (and arms), so I think you did a good job showing the dimension of it without making it hard to read.

One thing I would suggest, because I don't see it - is construction for your people. You should draw through more and use guidelines (like on the face) where you'll be able to line things up and get a proper perspective on it. Like I always start off with a circle and then a line goes from top to bottom to signify the middle of the face, and then another line (horizontal this time) for where the nose or eyes go. And then you just build around that.

Anyhow - just a bit of simple perspective will push characters so much further and make them much stronger.

Hi Patti,

I don't know if you're looking for feedback, but like Isaac, I'll assume you are. I like how the girl seems absorbed in the book. Couple of minor issues:
- The girl's forehead seems very wide. This is camouflaged by her bangs, but something to maybe fix before painting.
- Her left hand fingers look odd because they are all the same size and aligned. Right fingers are better positioned, but seem a little short in comparison.
Have fun painting her!

I am aware that her fingers look a bit like cocktail franks. ewww! Thanks for the input. I will tighten things up if I move to painting this.

I think her jaw is a bit strange. Kids don't have really defined features like that. They still have a good bit of baby fat in their faces.

I just bought this book from amazon so I too can get better kid drawings.
It's called "Facial Expressions Babies to teens" by Mark Simon. Has lots of kids pics from all different directions.

Steve thanks for the tip on the book. I have one that I got for adults that has been helpful. I will check this one out.
