what's wrong with this turtle?

I went ahead and colored it - and I really like how it turned out!  It might be the bg color and sky that's a little more colorful than my usual blue/white...I think the turtle looks more turtly when done.

I'm working with a writer who's coming up with a concept for the square animals...and she suggested a turtle character, so I thought I'd work one out to add to the list of characters I already have.  I'm still open to suggestions, if you have any things that might make it a stronger character...and now Ill even take color suggestions!

hmm...

well, i really like the design - and i really like how you've handled all the particulars. that includes the rear of the shell and the insertion points for all the limbs and head.

maybe what's throwing you is how small the shell ends up being compared to everything else? afterall, that's what gives a turtle it's gusto (without it they're just slow, helpless lizards. i dunno.

you could always play with the size of the shell top and see how it looks. maybe go as high as the pupils and round out the collar-part of the shell on the sides???

i think, overall, its fine though. the body structure is on the money and its fun to look at! how the heck did he get stranded? that's what i want to know.

by the way, your color looks great. the reflections in the water are an excellent touch - and you're right about finished color changing the overall look. well done!

I think pete is on to something about the shell size. Is there any reason the turtle couldn't be square and on all fours? Or that the body part could be a bit bigger?

I think that's the struggle with having characters that are squares - the top three quarters of the square are the face, and the bottom 1/4 is the body...I have the same weird problem with birds (because they have beaks) and fish (because it feels like the eyes should be on top or something)...

And I don't like to bend the square - if this ever becomes a show, I guess I'll have to start pushing the characters further (they can't all just stand there waving...although that would be cute)...

I will probably try to draw another turtle (this one with more of a ninja flavor) and I'll keep your comments in mind! And maybe he'll be doing something other than waving....but probably not...he'll be waving a weapon...
