Dummy Book Character

I decided to go more realistic on the character for the dummy book. My previous character was more quirky looking with a large head. What do you think of these two sketches? Thanks everyone.

I like the top sketch a lot. The second one has some anatomy issues. Her hands feel a bit off, and her arms seem stiff. There is also something with the mouth that is not quite right and her ear looks a little low. I love the monkey. I think you are on the right track. Just a few tweaks.

Good pencil technique!

I agree. The arms are off and the whole figure seems a bit stiff. I'd like see either more or less of her leg. Right now she's cut off at the knee and it is a bit distracting. (Avoid cropping at body joints, it makes the body look odd for some reason.)

I can't wait to see the rest.

Nice illustrations! I have a hard tome rendering the ocean as it breaks across sand, and you've done it quite nicely.

I also like that the characters seem to be consistent between the two panels. It seems obvious, but a lot of times people don't do that and the character shifts and morphs as the story goes along. And it's nice that the character is at two very different angles.

And I agree with the above comments. And I didn't know that about the joints and cropping, so it's good to learn (and it makes sense)!

Oh - one thing I want to add - the cup that the girl is holding, it should probably be lower than the hand as right now the hand line goes straight into the bottom of the cup line and flattens the whole thing out.

Thanks everyone for your honest feedback. I will be drawing her to make her arms look less stiff. I'll take a second look at the ear position as well Patti. Issac, I thought something was not quite right myself with the cup. Now I see what it is thanks for pointing that out. Not quite sure the problem with the lips. Can Patti or anyone explain further?

It helps me when I do the pose myself in the mirror and then compare to your drawing. You'll see right away where the stiffness is and what angles are odd.

good luck rendering that ocean...water is a pain to paint.

I agree with all the above comments, but I wanted to commend you on your consistency between panels. Clearly the same girl and such nice detail too. I would like to see them when it is done. :)
