I worked on this for a short while last week and then made changes and finished it Wednesday night. Just wanted to post something for the Holiday Weekend.
Great portrait, Steve. Another knock out for sure!
I enjoy the light source in particular. It really plays as sunlight setting and falling on his skin. You've done well with using the folds and wrinkles of his skin to make it feel more dramatic. Excellent.
If I were to criticize something, and its hard to do for this one, then I'd say his clothing could use some of the same lighting as the face. As it is now, it kinda feels like the painting has competing artistic moods - the dramatic/realistic head, and more "cartoony" clothing. I think adding more light effects to the reds could bring it together a bit more.
All that aside, this really is a strong illustration. You have a real knack for capturing a character and making it your own. I also really like the out-of-focus background and cropping. It really frames him well!
I agree with Pete. Very nice image, but the jacket feels like the lighting is a bit different. I remember this guy from when I lived in Columbus! He was a big deal.
Thanks for the comments. The jacket wasn't in the photo and actually the photo reference was of an older version of Woody that you can see on my blog. I had to make him a little more younger and tougher to stand out.
I will more than likely go back and fix that jacket.
Very nice stuff! I can't remember the last time I tried for something so realistic! I like that you're going back and forth between styles (cartoon/children's art and realisticky).
